Gradina Botanica "Dimitrie Brandza" a Universitatii din Bucuresti este o institutie de cultura, educatie si cercetare, un factor activ in procesul general de constientizare a relatiei dintre om si natura, prin prisma necesitatii conservarii diversitatii vegetale.
A fost infiintata in anul 1860 in timpul domniei lui Al. I. Cuza. In prezent are o suprafata de 17,5 ha si este organizata in sectoare: sectoare in aer liber, populate cu plante anuale si perene (Sectorul Decorativ, Sectorul Plante Rare, Sectorul Flora mediteraneana, Sectorul Flora Dobrogei, Sectorul Gradina Italiana, Rosariul, Colectia de Irisi, Sectorul Plante Utile si Sectorul Sistematic), sere de expozitie care adapostesc compartimente speciale pentru plante din diferite regiuni ale planetei (Palmieri, Orhidee, Ferigi Exotice, Plante Tropicale si Subtropicale, Plante Suculente, Cactusi, Bromelii) si sere de productie.
Colectiile de plante cuprind aproximativ 5.000 de taxoni. Institutia pune la dispozitia studentilor, cercetatorilor si a vizitatorilor si un Muzeu Botanic organizat pe principii ecologice, un Herbar General (BUC) care cuprinde aproximativ 500.000 de coli si o Librarie Botanica cu mai mult de 9.000 de carti. Gradina Botanica "Dimitrie Brandza" publica "Acta Horti Botanici Bucurestiensis", care in prezent a ajuns la volumul numarul 35 si "Delectus Seminum" publicatie utilizata ca baza pentru schimbul national si international de seminte.
In perspectiva, strategia Gradinii Botanice din Bucuresti, institutie cu caracter academic, vizeaza atāt dezvoltarea valentelor sale educative si de informare a publicului larg cāt si a celor de cercetare si conservare a diversitatii plantelor autohtone si alohtone.
The Botanical Garden "Dimitrie Brandza" of the Bucharest University is a cultural, educational and research center, an active factor within the general education process by consciously underlining the relation between human beings and nature and by the protection and the preservation of the vegetal diversity.
As an institution, it was founded in 1860, during the region of Al. I. Cuza. At present, it benefits of an area of about 17,5 ha organized in open sectors populated with annual and perennial specific plants (Decorative, Rare Plants, Mediteranean Flora, Dobrogea Flora, Italian Garden, Rosarium, Iris Collection, Useful Plants, Systematic Sector etc.), exhibition greenhouse with special compartments for plants from different regions of the planet (Palm, Orchids, Exotic Ferns, Tropical and Subtropical Plants, Succulents, Cactuses, bromeliads) and the productive greenhouse.
The plant collection of three sectors comprises about 5,000 taxa. The institution places at the disposal of students, research workers and visitors a Botanical Museum arranged by ecological principles, a General Herbarium (BUC) including about 500,000 sheets and a Botanical Library with over 9000 volumes. The Botanical Garden "Dimitrie Brandza" offers in exchange "Acta Horti Botanici Bucurestiensis", at present being edited the 28th volume, and "Delectus Seminum", the support of seed exchanges.
Considering the above-mentioned features and the academic character of the institution, the strategic evolution is directed towards the development of the Botanical Garden as an education, information and research centre meant to promote environmental cultural values.
